Lake Superior Amethyst can range from pale to deep purple, and from warm to cool hues. Amethyst is a type of quartz with a trigonal crystal structure and is comparable to agates with a hardness of 7. The Lake Superior Amethyst is formed when hot hydrothermal solutions rise through fractures in rocks and fill them with amethyst crystals and is found in veins in granite and other rocks around Thunder Bay, Ontario.
