The Lake Superior Amethyst can range from pale to deep purple, and from warm to cool hues. The Amethyst is comparable to agates, with a hardness of 7. The Lake Superior Amethyst is formed when hot hydrothermal solutions rise through fractures in rocks and fill them with amethyst crystals and is found in veins in granite and other rocks around Thunder Bay, Ontario.
